Women's Studies Colloquium - Identities online "What's on your mind" really? Identity, social norms, and self-expression in online spaces------------------------------ On Friday, Nov. 6, the Women's Interdisciplinary Studies Program will present Dr. Rosa Mikeal Martey, Department of Journalism & Technical Communication, who will speak on "'What's on your mind' really? Identity, social norms, and self-expression in online spaces." Online spaces like Facebook, Twitter, multi-player video games, and blogs have context-specific sets of social norms that affect how we interact and express ourselves. This talk will present recent research on the importance of context to the development of social norms and the ways that we perform our identities and the self online. Through a discussion of the relationships between self expression and online contexts, we will explore how feminist and other politicized identities are exposed or hidden as we navigate the social norms of specific spaces. Focusing on the representation of self online, this talk will invite participants to examine their own patterns in self-expression and identity creation in the various digital spaces they inhabit.
